Lesson Summary
This unit will reinforce the mild to moderately mentally impaired student's knowledge and use of idioms in both written and oral activities. There knowledge of idioms will be further enhanced by using the computer as a learning tool as demonstrated in their use of Internet search & word processing

Problem Statement
Students have you ever been told to "Do As I Say"? Raise your hand if you have. Think about that statement and let's apply it. John will you please Hit the Road? As John responds by leaving I say what are you doing go outside and hit the street with your fist. The class laughs and I begin the prepatory set of "What would happen if we always did what we were told to do?

What would happen if you go to work and your boss tells you to stick it in your ear as he offers you a shorp object. Keep in mind your boss is still learning the english language.


Results Presentation
Write a written report explaining what might happen if a person is unable to determine if an idiom said to him is inferred or literal.

Have students create a bulletin board collage of what idioms would look like.

Write down strange phrases they hear at school home, commuity they don't understand and bring to class

Strategies to develop students' attitudes towards the problem, motivation, and overall mindfulness:
Role Play being someone in a foreign country and not knowing the language enough to determine an idiom phrase, how can one use other clues such as body language, etc. Think of other ways to figure out meanings of phrases other than verbal explanation or written definition,
